The Secret to Defying Gravity

The Belly Band

It took me three pregnancies to figure it out. How to keep your pants up. Essentially what us pregnant ladies are trying to do every day is defy gravity. They have all different kinds of pants for this. Maternity stores will sell low waisted pants with a wrap around stretchy band in the place of a button or pants that have a stretchy material that pulls over your belly. Because I’m carrying so low (and high!) this time around, the low waisted bands are so low that I’m practically exposing myself. The pants with stretchy material will pull over my belly, then slowly stretch out over the course of the day and fall down, bringing the pants with it.

Enter the Belly Band. Perhaps since it is advertised as something you use to extend the life of your regular clothes or to help you get back into your pre-pregnancy clothes quicker, I never thought to use it the entire pregnancy, even with pregnancy clothes. But it really works! I haven’t been hiking my pants up every 10 minutes like the last two pregnancies. Nor have I had the exposed butt crack problem…

Exhale Spa

I must have looked very tired and uncomfortable when I saw my friend Hedy on Monday night because the very next day, out of the blue, I received a Gift Certificate from Exhale Spa.

It was from both Hedy and another girlfriend I met through her, Elissa.

It was one of those complete random acts of kindness. It was not my birthday or any other holiday. I did not just give birth, find out I was pregnant, or suffer from any sort of trauma where one might consider giving a gift.

For some reason, they just wanted to make me feel special. And you know what? It worked.

I worked the gift for all it was worth. Adam wanted me to cab it both ways but I left early and took the subway. Part of the fun of getting out of the house and away from the kids is feeling the city around you. I wanted to walk on the streets, peer into the bars and restaurants, eavesdrop on other people’s conversations.

The pre-natal massage was one where you lay on your side with a big pillow to snuggle (as oppose to the table with the hole in it for your belly). I actually found it more comfortable this way this time. My masseuse, Amanda, used just the right amount of pressure. As a surprise bonus, the table was actually heated when I laid down. It was all over way too soon!

After all that walking, I did decide it would be best to cab it home. I’m really getting big and uncomfortable. When I stand and walk, I can feel a lot more pressure then I ever did with my other pregnancies.

Juniper Park

Juniper Park

Wednesday morning found us without any errands to run and a need to get out of the house (it’s cleaning day). Luckily we had excellent weather for March. My good friend Pam was in the same predicament as me so she suggested we meet at Juniper Park.

It was a lovely morning which reminded me of the endless mornings Pam and I used to share when we both only had one kid. We would scour the city looking for new and different parks to explore. And with the ease of only watching one, we had plenty of time to chat and enjoy each other’s company. Since our older kids are in school, we were back to one kid each – for now.

I first heard of this park from my friend Vonda. She had 3 kids at the time, I was still on my first. Even with one kid I thought it was a great park. It had all the elements one needs in a park. A water element. Sand. Two play structures. Two swing sets. Soft surface. Grassy areas, small but enough to picnic. Benches. Sun. And Shade.

Ben at Juniper Park

Now that I am soon to be a mother of four, I saw other benefits of this park that Vonda must have already thought about. It’s small enough to see your kids where ever you are standing. It’s completely fenced off. And there is plenty of free parking.

The only minus is that there are no bathrooms. Unfortunately for a lot of the parks in the city this is the case, so it’s hardly a limiting factor for me. Luckily I have boys, they can just pee on a tree. Hmmm, I should probably ask my attorney husband if there is an age limit for arrest of public urination…

Pregnancy Update – Week 30

Monday night I spent most of the night tossing and turning in bed. I felt sharp pains in my abdomen, coming and going. I was worried I had started early labor.

In the morning I watched the clock. About every 30 minutes I would get these pains. They didn’t feel like the labor pains I had before. But people say every pregnancy is different.

I consulted my pregnancy book and the internet. Perhaps it was Braxton-Hicks? I surely hoped it was that – I did not want to deliver this early.

The symptoms did not match for Braxton-Hicks. Braxton-Hicks, or false contractions. The book told me they are suppose to be painless. And although you may feel them on the front of your abdomen, they are suppose to be irregular.

Still these pains didn’t match labor either. They didn’t get more intense. They didn’t feel like menstrual cramps.

Luckily on Tuesday morning we had our appointment with the doctor.

I asked her about the pains. She said if they were not Braxton-Hicks it was probably gastrointestinal. Basically, I had a stomach bug. A huge relief!

To make me feel better, she check my cervix. I was about 1cm dilated, which she said was perfectly normal for someone who has had kids before and is carrying twins.

Then she suggested we schedule another growth ultrasound for 3 weeks from now. I was please to see I don’t need to start my weekly hospital visits yet!

Finally, I weighed in at 162 pounds. No weight gain for two weeks.

The Soap Box

People always talk about terrible twos. Jack’s terrible two stage happened when he was closer to three. Ben, however, is getting very mischievous at 2 and 1/2. Perhaps since Jack has broken me in, I don’t find it terrible anymore, or maybe Ben is just a more easy going kid.

Either way, lately it’s like following a tornado around the house every day. While I’m cleaning up the mess down stairs, Ben will run upstairs and throw every stuffed animal (they have about 20 each), pillow and duvet off the bunk beds. Cleaning up the bunk beds? Ben will move to the book shelf and remove all the books in 10 seconds flat.

Ben has also developed a bit of a potty mouth, using the words, “stupid, “idiot”, “I hit you” (suppose to be ‘I hate you’) and “shut down” (suppose to be ‘shut up’). No amount of warnings, time outs, or taking of special toys away can seem to stop him.

Another one of his favorite things is to take bottles of liquid soap and dump them everywhere. Just today I followed him upstairs to find him about to dump an entire bottle of Aveeno Baby, Costco size into the shower.

Though I often reprimand Jack for tattling on Ben, I often find out from Jack when Ben is dumping soap or some other offense. Yesterday while we had a play date with my friend Vonda, we found out through Jack that my expensive L’Occtaine hand soap, which comes in a large rectangular box, was dumped all over the bathroom. Twice. Ben!

So you can imagine my surprise last night when I opened up the bathroom door to find Jack, not Ben, inside dumping my rectangular box of soap! I wondered how often Ben was actually the dumper?

I know that lying is quite common at Jack’s age. But framing? Now that’s a whole different level of brain power. I wasn’t sure if I should be angry or proud. In the end he was scolded.

Just another day of crazy at the Calisoff house. I just keeping thinking every day, this is as calm and in control as it will be for a long time.

And now I must end this post, Ben is throwing his toys across the basement and I need intervene.

Potty Training, Does it Ever End?

Last night, midway through watching a movie we heard the pitter patter of running feet on the floor above us. Adam quickly ran up to investigate. He found Jack standing in the kitchen, peeing on his shoes.

Incredibly, this is not a freak occurrence. This is the second time we’ve found Jack in some place in the house that is no where near the bathroom, completely asleep and peeing.

My first thought was of a roommate I once had in Hong Kong, who got so drunk one night he did the same thing all over his wife’s closet. When I heard the story I laughed hysterically. She didn’t think it was very funny. And perhaps because it was Adam’s shoes and not mine I again could not stop giggling, it took Adam a little more time to find the humor in the situation.

I’m not even sure if there is a way to deal with this sort of behavior. He’s not conscience and doesn’t even realize it’s happening. And depending on where he decides to pee, it can be easier to clean up then a wet bed.

In other potty news, I’ve been sitting Ben on the potty most days around the time he poops and he normally can produce a poop for me. Otherwise I think I’ve admitted defeat, I will most likely have three kids in diapers for some time period in my life. Because of the pregnancy, there are a few hours every day where I need to sit on the couch flitting in and out of sleep, to tired to have the vigilance that potty training requires.

Fresh Picks for the Week (Feb 29)

This week Romaine lettuce, cauliflower, a sweet potato, an avocado, tomatoes, an english cucumber, onions and kale arrived on my doorstep.

That night I was making a rice pilaf with dinner so used up some of the onions in that. So easy to do and so yummy. My mom taught me, it was one of her staples when we were growing up. Sauté the onions in a little olive oil, then pour in a cup of white rice. Sauté until rice is glassy looking. Add chicken broth (2 cups), cover and simmer for 20 minutes. When done, add parmesan.

Kale was made into kale chips.

Fresh Picks 29 Feb 2012

The Romaine, tomatoes, and cucumber were paired with feta to make a greek salad. Just added some dried oregano, lemon juice and olive oil.

Left over tomatoes were put into a caprese salad. They were also sliced with the left over cucumber in my hummus sandwich for lunch one day.

The sweet potato will be added to the other ones I bought this week to our dinner tonight. Simply baked then mashed with a little butter and brown sugar. The kids love them. I made Mar-a-Lago Turkey Burgers this week. So yummy. I’ll be interested to see if anyone can tell the difference in sweet potatoes, store bought vs Irv and Shelly.

Cauliflower and avocado were not so exciting. Cauliflower was steamed and eaten with a little salt and pepper. Avocado cut and salted and eaten plain. Sometimes the most delicious way is the simplest!

Pregnancy Update – Week 29

Last night Adam and I lay in bed spooning, his hands resting on the top of my belly. The new little ones did the equivalent of a ‘Riverdance’ show for him. I actually think we may have professional tap dancers in there. He whispered in my ear, “If these next two are as great as the last two it’s going to be amazing.”

At night, while Jack and Ben slept peacefully in the room next to us and I heard these encouraging words I felt in complete control. We were under control. Two more will be a cinch. Right?

But the light of day today brought with it reality. I sat this afternoon, feet up, at my friend Lottie’s house as I watched her juggle three kids of her own. Stir the pot, what were we talking about again?, pulling out art supplies for bored kids, wiping a newly potty trained butt, whirling around the kitchen at a dizzying pace. It was a more elaborate juggling act than Ringling Brothers. It certainly didn’t have the rhythm or uniformity that is comforting when one juggles. Just the uncertainty of hoping that you’ll catch each pin in time to get the next one.

I can not fathom how another two will change our lives. I know we’ll be able to handle it, but as far as doing it with grace or any sort of pre-meditated thought?

The good news is that everything is normal this week. As far as the physical pregnancy goes, I’m getting noticeably slower, more tired and more out of breath as each day goes by, but I’m not nauseous, nor do I have any eating problems like reflux or a shrinking stomach. I take it as easy as I can, even if that means the shame of my husband coming home to find dirty dishes in the sink and yet another day where I didn’t manage to pick up the dry cleaning that I promised I would.

I just hope and pray that they stay in until the magic dates that my doctor proposed (anywhere from April 28th until May 18th). And I’m waiting for the time when my shape defies logic. People who have twins are starting to warn me about the last month. That you don’t look right. Don’t worry, if I make it there, I will be sure to post pictures for everyone to gawk at.

Leap Day

Why do we have leap days?

After a bit of research, I learned that we do not rotate exactly 365 years around the sun, but rather approximately 365 days and 6 hours.

So they added another day every four years, when an extra 24 hours have accumulated.

However, it’s a little more complicated than that. I always assumed leap days happened every 4 years, but in fact it is slightly inaccurate to calculate an additional 6 hours each year. It is more like 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes, and 16 seconds.

To compensate for the difference, an end-of-century year is not a leap year unless it is also exactly divisible by 400. This means that the years 1600 and 2000 were leap years, as will be 2400 and 2800, but the years 1700, 1800 and 1900 were not, nor will 2100, 2200 and 2300.

Besides their rarity, what else is special about leap days?

Supposedly women can propose to men. Though I’ve yet to hear from someone who actually did this successfully, leap day or not.

Our Grandpa Bill celebrates his 19th birthday today. (He’s actually 76!)

And keeping with theme or rarities, we had a freakishly warm 60 degree February day. We ended up taking Jack’s new bike to the park for a ride. I hope everyone enjoyed the nice weather as much as we did!

Black Jack Pierre

It’s a sad state of affairs when the big parties in your life have gone from weddings to 13 year old birthdays.

We’ve gotten to the stage in our lives when most of our friends are married and have kids old enough to have bar mitzvahs.

I guess the nice thing is that it seems like most of these parties are fancier than some wedding ceremonies I’ve been too.

Last night we attended a bar mitzvah.

It was held at a very prestigious country club in the suburbs. I could not believe how many children attended! Jack Pierre had NINETY friends!

The theme of the party was ‘Casino’. They rented poker tables, slot machines, and roulette.

There was a 5 person dance troupe and DJ which kept the party lively at all times. They were masters of keeping the party going. It was like a perfectly choreographed dance inside a dance party. While adults ate, kids did the Champagne Snowball. While adults were called up to celebrate their anniversaries, kids ate. Everyone danced the Hora.

Even my pregnant belly didn’t stop me from getting on the dance floor. The music and entertainers were too enticing.

I took lots of pictures of the party. We also have a boy named Jack who will have a bar mitzvah in a short seven years. Maybe we can steal the theme? Though who knows if we will be able to afford anything like this. Essentially it’s like paying for a wedding for our kids at age 13. But as Adam pointed out, we get a discount. Even though we will have four kids, with twins we will only have to pay for three parties!
