Field Mouse Diorama

Yes, it's a Zhu Zhu Pet

Jack goes to an amazing pre-school. He is learning so much. I know if he stayed at home with me there is no way he would know things like his alphabet and how to use scissors.

One thing I am surprised about is that they occasionally have home work. Homework in pre-school? And it’s not easy things like watching them trace letters. It’s stuff like science experiments. Recently we were asked to make a diorama. A diorama! I’m not sure how long it took all the other families but it was an insane amount of time and effort. Adam was working with him for over an hour to produce this. And I spent a ton of time researching and shopping beforehand. I can’t imagine how much more effort it would have been if I didn’t basically buy everything ready for assembly.

It’s really freaking me out about the future. How will I cover four kids homework assignments every night?

Little Beans Cafe

Ben at Little Beans Cafe

A few days ago I met my friend Sara at Little Beans Cafe. I’ve been here before when it first opened. At that time it was very crowded. And for some reason I remember the open space + all the different push cars = a lot of crying.

This time I liked it a lot better. Maybe it’s because I didn’t spend the whole time telling Ben not to ram other people with push cars, like I did the first time with Jack. Or maybe because it wasn’t so crowded that I felt claustrophobic. Either way, it’s definitely something I would do again.

There are a few things that make this pay-to-play space different than some of the others in the city. First, you can bring food and drink into the play space. How often do you wish you had a coffee while you were watching your children not share well with others? We ordered a grill cheese and ate it without having to disrupt the play that much at all. Also, they give all the kids stickers with their names on them. I found this a nice touch. Kids respond to your reprimands a lot better if you use their name first. It just makes it all a bit more friendly.

It’s open M-F from 9-6. Sat from 9-3 and Sun from 9-1. Daily pass is $12 per kid, siblings are $7. You can save money buying a 10 visit pass or yearly membership.

Don’t forget your socks!

Pregnancy Update – Week 22

I think at this point I’m fully aware that we are going to have FOUR kids. We are duly preparing for it by gathering baby stuff, setting up the nursery, looking at minivans, bunking the older boys, going to all the right doctor’s visits. We have hired a summer helper. I’m starting to get excited about the next challenge I’m going to face.

However, I’m not sure I’ve really got my head fully around it all. A few weeks ago, after the 20 week ultrasound showed how different the babies looked, Adam said, “Maybe it will be a girl and a boy.”.

I replied, “Ugh, girl and boy! That would be the worst! The whole benefit of twins is one drop off instead of two! If we have different sex they will have different activities.”

So Adam said next, “Maybe it will be two girls. Then you will finally get your girls.”

I replied, “Ugh, two girls! All those female drama hormones doubled! Forget it!”

So, what was left but for Adam to say, “Maybe it will be two boys?”

Me, “Four boys! Are you crazy! I’ll be bruised forever!”

Finally Adam sat me down and looked me in the eye and said, “You realize one of these three scenarios is going to happen, right?”

Hmph. I guess I haven’t really thought it through! Right now it’s just a haze in my mind. A haze with Jack, Ben and two other blobs swirling around. And Adam!

In truth, I don’t care what the sex is. As long as they are healthy it will be great. And no matter what the sex of the twins are, I’m the kind of person that eventually feels no matter what the result, I’m lucky that it turned out that way. I guess I should start thinking of those positive reasons now, eh?

I did get a comment I liked from a Dad in the park the other day. In his East End accent he said, “If it’s two boys, no one is going to mess with them in school, are they?”

Now that’s a plus!

Winter!

Ask and you shall receive. Or should I say complain and the universe will turn around and bite you in the butt?

Huge snow storm started today. It’s finally winter!

I think my friend Joseph said it best when he wrote on facebook, “I think you can accurately gauge a person’s age by their reaction to an approaching snowstorm.”

Ben and I picked Jack up after school in the sled…

Ben had his mouth open like a dog trying to catch snow.

We played in the park…

Ben can't smile, his mouth is full of snow.

Then met some friends along the way…

Winter?

I have no idea what’s going on. Perhaps it’s because for once I managed to buy Jack’s sled BEFORE they ran out of them at the stores. Where is the cold weather and snow? Pregnancy over a Chicago winter should be the best. But it’s been so warm I’m basically walking around with saddle bags under my arm pits.

Breathe Right Strips

Marriage is so great. I love that you can just go to sleep with whatever crazy contraption on and your spouse doesn’t blink an eye.

We watched Bridesmaids the movie the other day. All my pregnancy hormones had me crying at her want for a stable relationship. One where she didn’t have to scurry to the bathroom to put lipstick on before her bed buddy woke up.

I’m so glad I never have to go back to those awkward days, though I did have my share.

Like the guy who surprised me by taking his teeth out and put them next to the bed. I learned later it’s common for Rugby players to get their teeth knocked out. But it was very awkward at the time.

Lately I’ve been congested at night. Not fully, just a bit of blockage that pools in which ever nostril is on the bottom. Pregnancy has confined me to two sleeping positions – right side or left.

Anytime I turn over, the pool moves to the other nostril slowly, waking me up until it drains. Like I don’t wake up enough during the night with the kids and bathroom breaks!

So these strips are sooo amazing. If you have this problem you must try them. I sleep so much better! Whoever thought of them is a genius. Now if only they could solve my problem of an easy way to tie a water ballon my life would be perfect…

Lois Klein Park

Just another cool and different thing about living in the city. There are a zillion little parks, all different, for us to play at.

We call this place the train park – the Metra train to the suburbs travels right above it and the kids scream like crazy every time it passes…

Ahhh! The Train!

It’s small enough so that you can see pretty much spot your kids at all times. And there is only one gated entrance. Unfortunately, it’s too small for a restroom. But in the winter it’s completely sunny!

Kohl’s Children’s Museum

Ben in the Water Room - He was soaked!

I first visited this place when Jack was somewhere in his first year of life. I remember thinking it’s soooo amazing, so clever! I want to live here! We went a few times after that and each time I enjoyed it immensely.

I have not been back since I had Ben. So it’s been a while. But not much has changed.

Both kids had a lot of fun, but this time around I definitely enjoyed it a lot less. Unlike the Children’s Museum at Navy Pier, the Kohl’s Children’s Museum is basically one big open space. Most of the rooms have multiple entries or a single entry with no gate. I found myself darting around frantically trying to keep two kids in the same room.

Jack Decorating a Mini Willis (previously Sears) Tower

Although it didn’t bother me with just one kid, this time around the crowds in the suburbs grated on me. Why is everything so crowded in the suburbs? Isn’t the point of moving out there to have more space?

Also, in the city, you get a bunch of young energetic adults volunteering. Your kid makes a mess, they laugh and join in. Suburbs? Crabby retirees who remind you to put away all the fake groceries after you are finished playing with them.

In conclusion, it’s a great museum if you have a one-on-one coverage situation. Or if it doesn’t stress you out not to see your kids every single second.

We paid $28 for the three of us to get in this time, but the entry price can be applied to your membership cost if you buy that day. Membership was $100. Parking is free, one nice suburb perk. But I don’t think we’ll make it out there another 4 times this year so I skipped purchasing the membership.

Pregnancy Update – 21 Weeks

Belly Shot 21 Weeks

This week I saw my Ob/Gyn again.

I weighed in at 152 pounds, so I’m up about 32 pounds. For some reason it looks like more, based on my last two pregnancies – see my Belly Comparison. The clothes I wore when I was 8 months pregnant don’t fit at all. But I hate the thought of spending money on clothes that I will only wear for a few months. In the end, Adam eyed my last two ill fitting outfits and marched me to the fancy maternity store and spoiled me with a new wardrobe. I tried to buy everything tent like. Hopefully it will cover me until the end of the pregnancy.

People keep asking me if it’s a girl or a boy in there. I love to see the reaction when they find out it could be both! Then they realize I’m carting around 2 other kids! I should start counting the times I’ve heard, “Good Luck” and “Oh My God” when these sort of conversations occur. It’s a lot.

I’m also starting to gather a lot of very odd and funny comments about twins and pregnancy. For example, one woman at Whole Foods the other day said, “I gave birth to a 10 pound, 5 ounce baby so I know what that feels like.”
