Fresh Picks (July 3)

DSC_0326

We received escarole, napa cabbage, yukina savoy, lacinato kale, garlic scapes, cilantro and snap peas on July 3rd.

The Garlic scapes were grilled for my fourth of july mixed grill plate. The cilantro was also used that meal, mixed into brown rice with fresh lime juice. Everyone loved it, even Jack who doesn’t normally like green things in his food.

The Napa Cabbage was stir fried with some left over mushrooms by Nenoy. She very kindly took all my left over veggies and put them to good use.

Yukina savoy, unfortunately, never made it to my plate. Between all these fourth of July and Ben’s birthday celebrations I didn’t have time to fit them in. I found them wilting in my refrigerator drawer this morning and sadly threw them out.

The escarole was used in a salad. It has a bitter taste to it that Adam likes when he eats lettuce.

I went back to kale chips again for the kale. I’m not sure if lacinato kale is different from the curly stuff or if I just wasn’t vigilant enough, but they ended up a bit burnt. I still ate most of them, but I will remember to keep a better watch on them next time.

Finally snap peas were eaten raw. The outsides were a bit tough but I broke them open and ate the beans inside.

Ben’s Superhero Beach Birthday Party

This year we decided to throw Ben’s birthday party on the beach. He wanted a super hero themed party and we did our best to theme it that way.

First Adam sat down with Ben and went through pictures of cakes on the internet. In typical style, Ben requested something completely outrageous. A cake with super heros, monkeys and beach scenes. And also in typical style, Adam was whole heartily on board. I guess the coconut doesn’t fall far from the palm tree.

DSC_0610Deerfields Bakery did this amazing job of complying. This  is a triple layer cake. Chocolate cake, then fudge icing, then yellow cake, then cherry filling, then chocolate again. They even made sure to add Ben’s favorite super hero, Wonder Woman. The other boys all requested either the Hulk, Ironman, or Captain America.

DSC_0538For the entertainment, we did a few different things.

Bubbie and Grandpa Bill, who were in town for Ben’s birthday, were in charge of the tattoo station. Superhero tattoos as well as princesses and transformers were available.

Next we created a treasure hunt. Adam and our friend Keyandez dug out a rectangle moat and then the kids help dump bags of dollar store trinkets in. Adam covered them all up with sand. We put out all the shovels and sifters we had and away the kids went. Anything the kids found they could put in their goodie bags and take home with them. The dollar store had loads of bags of plastic army men, plastic bugs, frogs, snakes, spiders, and we also threw in some cheap little cars. Okay, it wasn’t really superhero themed, but it was too good of an idea veto.

Finally we bought cans of silly string and repackaged them as Spider Man’s Super Spider Webs. All the kids were armed with them and ready to battle evil villains.

How did we get DSC_0530villains at the party? Well, late last night I searched the internet for an easy way to make a mask.

I found a site that showed me one from tin foil and tape.

You take 3 sheets of tin foil, shape them to your face, then cut it out like a mask.

Next I covered them in duct tape.

Finally I poked holes in the sides and tied some string on them.

Some of the father’s happily agreed to play the villains. In fact I wished I had more masks because I think some of the other fathers would have enjoyed it too.

Don’t worry, we remembered to bring a rake to the beach so we could clean up all the mess we made afterwards.

After all the morning fun, it was time for some pizza and subs from Amatos Pizza. I added a watermelon that had been chilling in the cooler on the side.

DSC_0588Finally, the moment Ben had been waiting for – the cake!DSC_0617

We stuck around for a while afterwards. It was a beautiful day and the kids enjoyed the beach while I was able to soak up the sun afterwards and watch the sail boats drift by from the Race to Mackinac.

Happy birthday, Ben, my sweet little boy. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Tony and Nenoy Visit

Tony and Nenoy are visiting us this week. As I mentioned before, they are related to me, somehow. (Obviously on my mother’s side.)

I’ve spent a lot of time at their house in Florida, but this was the first time they came to mine. I wasn’t sure what to expect when they visited. All I knew is that they planned their trip around the Taste of Chicago.

Which really tells you quite a lot of about these people. They are serious foodies. Whenever I see them I’m always surprised they do not weigh 1000 pounds each. Because these people can eat.

They arrived with a list of things they needed to check out. Al’s Beef, Deep Dish, a genuine Chicago hot dog, and of course, all the tid bits at the Taste of Chicago. They even managed to fit some culture and city tours in, between bouts of eating. And when they returned at night, tired from all the walking, they turned on “Master Chef” and watched people cooking food. We also spent a lot of time talking about food. I got many great tips this week. I promise to share them in later blogs.

A couple of mornings I woke up to see this on my kitchen counter…

DSC_0483I told Jack we were having custard buns and Chai Sui Bao from Chinatown for breakfast. He shouted, “I love those!”

Even though it was naughty white carbs and forbidden pork, I had to smile. It warmed my heart that Jack is already integrated into the Chinese culture. Over the generations we may have lost the language and the slanty eyes, but here was proof that a little piece of my heritage will be preserved for at least one more generation.

DSC_0487It turned out that having Tony and Nenoy around for the week was a real bonus for me. They were super helpful with all the kids. Nenoy cleaned my kitchen better than I knew how to and Aaron became attached to Tony, following him around everywhere and crying unless Tony was holding him.

Not only did they watch the kids, clean and come home every night bearing food but on Thursday, they also cooked us an amazing meal.

Nenoy made dumplings and Tony made a Jamaican Brown Stew Chicken. Both were so delicious I ended up stuffing myself before my girls night out that evening.

It has been so nice having them here. They basically showed up and acted exactly like family should. Or how you hope, in a perfect world, they would.

I’m going to be sad to see them leave. Perhaps I can convince them to come back next summer, surely they haven’t finished tasting all the culinary delights Chicago has to offer?

Happy 4th Birthday Ben!

Ben turned four today. He has been waiting for this day since Jack turned 6.

“Where are my presents?” he has been asking us every day. Here they are Ben, in the wrapping paper you picked out for yourself…

DSC_0391

For breakfast we had pumpkin chocolate chip pancakes…

DSC_0380And because Jack was so upset by all the attention Ben was getting, I made sure to make something special for him too…DSC_0382

As you can see Jack had soccer camp this morning. I asked Anjelica to come early so I could take Ben to do something very special for his birthday. A cupcake decorating class at Sweet Mandy B’s. Not just any cupcake class, a superhero cupcake class!

DSC_0401 Afterwards Ben got to pick where we went for lunch. He picked (surprise, surprise) MacDonalds. They had minions from Despicable Me 2 as the happy meal toy. Since Adam took Jack and Adam to see that movie yesterday, he was very excited. We brought Jack’s buddy Timmy with us to lunch. I bought them all 2 minions each. It was the best thing I ever did. They were chasing each other in the play room afterwards and couldn’t touch each other because they were all double fisted – a minion in each hand.

IMG_4886

We headed back home for the afternoon. We have visitors arrive today from Florida. Tony and Nenoy, who are somehow related to me but no one can seem to explain how.

They were great with the kids. Ben decided to change his name this afternoon to “Mr. Naked” for our guests, but they didn’t seem to mind…

IMG_4895

For dinner Ben ordered pizza. We got Giordanos famous stuffed pizza for our guests, a white carb cheese explosion that any visitor from out of town must experience to believe.

Finally, we lit the chocolate on chocolate cake picked out by Ben, sorry I mean Mr. Naked,  or … well … uhm … whoever he is … he picked out the writing on top …

Santa’s Villiage

Adam at Santa’s Village with his cousins.

Recently Adam heard somewhere that Santa’s Village had reopened. He remembered the place fondly from when he was a kid.

He decided to plan a trip with the older boys.

Adam has been hyping this trip up so much to the kids that he was worried they would be disappointed. At night before bed he would play them the video from their website.

But how could anyone be disappointed with this line up? Jack and Adam actually sent me this list in an email so I could relive again with them exactly how they went about their day.

1 Truck ride

3 Race cars
4 Boat rides

6 Balloon ride
7 Rocket ship
8 Fire engine 2x

This ride actually had real hoses on them. They drive you to a fire and the kids squirt the hoses to put the fire out.

17 reindeer ride
18 pony race

And of course after a day like that, the only thing to do in the long car ride home is…

Yes, that is a face full of chocolate.

Fourth of July

Fourth of July found us sunny and warm for the first time in days. It was a welcome change, considering it is JULY and SUMMER and therefore we should be enjoying the only three month of glorious weather allotted to us Midwesterners. Not that snow and cold doesn’t have it’s moments, but you know what they say… you can take the girl out of Florida but you can’t take Florida out of the girl.

Adam agreed to have some friends over so I picked friends that matched our family well. Husband that Adam likes. Wife that I like. And a kid who is Jack’s age that he likes. It’s actually a lot harder than you think to find, a family where all the members invited are matched well with someone in our family.

Adam spent at ton of time cleaning up our deck so we could then go and mess it up.

We did our best to make it July Fourthy.

On the fourth, you gotta grill….

And make some sort of food that has red, white and blue in it…

DSC_0365

I had the kids assemble desserts for the adults. Strawberries, blueberries, angel food cake, whipped cream. They then decided we needed more toppings so I broke out the chocolate chips and sprinkles too.

Then, we got a surprise dessert from the neighbor. I thought the free food would stop coming when Charlie closed his restaurant, but I was happily mistaken.

Limits of a 4 Child Lifestyle

This summer has been testing my limits as a mother of 4 small kids.

It’s much better than last summer, where I couldn’t be by myself with all four of them for longer than an hour. But it’s still very limiting. And I’m not sure if I was just more scared back then to be by myself and less willing to let kids cry. Perhaps I’m just getting used to the absolute chaos. Or maybe it is actually easier.

Still, I can not go to most parks by myself. That rules out a lot.

I can run errands.

Target

Target

My method is to put the twins in the stroller and push them while dragging the shopping cart behind me. Sometimes Jack and Ben are sitting in the back cart. On the way in and out I am very strict. Both older boys must hold onto the stroller the entire walk from the car to the store. I still find it extremely stressful, though. I had Jack and Ben run away from me in the supermarket the other day, they were inthralled in their ongoing drama, the one where Jack antagonized Ben and Ben tries to attack him in anger.  Sometimes Ben randomly attacks Jack and then Jack antagonizes Ben because of it. It’s a ‘which came first the chicken or the egg’ type scenario.

They ran away from me and after calling them to come back repeatedly, I finally got them back by yelling across the entire store that they just lost their dessert that evening. The check out woman looked at me with sympathy and said, “Rough day?”

I answered, “No, it’s always like this.”

The sympathy drained from her eyes and she hardened, looking at me with new eyes. They were the eyes of someone who might call child services regarding this incident.

It’s moments like this when I realize how out of control everything is, and how my life is totally unlike most people’s lives that I come in contact with.

Yesterday I was pleasantly surprised to find a new thing I could do with all four kids. Something all parties found enjoyable.

Play dates at my own house!

IMG_4818I had a few of Ben’s school friends over for a play date. I enjoyed adult conversation while my kids occupied themselves with friends instead of the chicken/egg drama that seems to play out when we are stuck in the house by ourselves.

Undoubtedly this summer I will find more ways to manage these four kids alone, without everyone driving each other nuts. I hope. Wish me luck.

Fresh Picks (June 19)

Kale, White Turnips, Broccoli Raab, Pea Vine, Green Onions, Russett Potatoes, Leeks, and Asparagus.

DSC_0190After a little bit of research, I learned that Pea Vines are actually Duo Miao – my favorite chinese green to order at Chinese Restaurants. I know they are seasonal. You could only get them in China at certain times. I used to order them year round. I was mostly rejected. But it was worth it for the few times a year that people actually had it! I decided to sauté them in the wok, Chinese style, just the way I like them. I used a very simple recipe from the internet, Sauteed Dou Miao. For some reason it wasn’t as good as the restaurants. The stems were very chewy. I’m not sure if I didn’t cook it long enough or if I cooked it too long?

I tried a new recipe for Kale, one I saw on Food Network with over 500 reviews and still it kept it’s 5 star rating. Massaged Kale Salad. Except I didn’t have mango. Or sunflower seeds. So I threw in grilled peaches and slivered almonds instead. So good. Seriously, so good. Go out and get some kale. Right now.

The leeks and potato were a natural match. I made them into a soup along with some of the green onions. Simply sauteed leeks, green onions, diced potatoes in a pot, then chicken stock. Simmered about 30 minutes, added a dash of milk and blended. I left the skin of the potato on because it has added nutritional value. it whizzed in easily and the soup had little brown flecks in it.

The rest of the green onion went into turkey burgers.

White turnips we sliced thin and added to salads. I put them in a spinach salad with mandarin orange vinaigrette, leftover baked salmon, tomatoes, shredded carrots, tomatoes, strawberries and feta. It was delish. They went equally as well in my butter lettuce salad with a mustard vinaigrette.

Asparagus was simply steamed and eaten with a dash of olive oil, salt and pepper. I didn’t even share it with the family.

The Broccoli rabe was added to a calzone. I cut the stems, then boiled for about 8 minutes, then flash cooled, then sauteed in garlic with some mushrooms. I added precooked crumbled Italian sausage to the mix. Then I folded some shredded mozzarella into ricotta, spread it on rolled out, circular pizza dough from trader joes. I topped with the broccoli rabe mixture and baked. I added a side of marinara for dipping.

Summer Beach Days

Anjelica and the twins are spending a lot of time together lately and I guess that makes them in sync.

When she showed up today they were all wearing some sort of Chicago Bull’s paraphernalia.

DSC_0284As soon as she arrived I left these two young wrestlers in her capable hands and took the older wrestlers to the beach.DSC_0282

We had our first beach day today. Now it’s summer!

The Pirate Park

This afternoon I decided to try a bigger park with the four kids. Anjelica was there to help, but I picked this specific park because I wanted to see just how hard it would be if I wanted to take all the kids there by myself.

So far I only feel comfortable with the four kids outside the house in very few places. We have a park near our house where I can cover them all. It’s very small and you can see your kids from every angle. Unfortunately a park that small is really only appropriate for very little kids, already Ben is bored by it. Jack has been over it for years.

So, after the rain cleared we headed to Supera Park.

For the first ten minutes they all played nicely in the sandbox. I had time to sit and chat with Anjelica. I thought maybe, just maybe I could be here alone. It was a great park. Big enough for the older kids but small enough so I can see them all almost all the time.

DSC_0256

This peace lasted for about 10 minutes. Soon Jack and Ben were off and running to the play structures. Jack was throwing his splash balls in a left over puddle. Ben had taken his shoes off and was running wild.

Anjelica and I find it easiest at places like this to each watch a twin and the older boys get overseen ad hoc.

Jack spent some time hissing at a group of girls. I’m not sure if they were flattered or disgusted. Ben joined in and started shoving. He got a few time outs for that.

Anjelica grabbed Sam just as he was trying to climb down backwards from a 10 foot drop.

Next thing I knew I looked over and Ben was prancing around completely naked.

“I’m Mr. Naked Pants!” He yelled, running over and grinning at me.

“Okay Ben, Mr. Naked Pants only lives at home. He’s not allowed in the park….” I replied as I forced clothes on his flailing, protesting body.

My little monkeys.

My little monkeys.

Jack spent a lot of time playing with the twins. He’s actually pretty good at it. They have their own private jokes that I have no idea why they are funny. He has incredible patience for the ‘game’ where they hand a toy back and forth to each other over and over again.

Sliding with Sam

In the end I realized that there was NO WAY I could have done this without Anjelica. Even without the older kids, it’s just too dangerous to have two kids that are the twins age running around without constant supervision. Unless I tether them together, they are in danger.

Every single day I have her, I am so grateful for Anjelica.
