Good Things Come in 3s Too

It all started with fried chicken. Yes. Fried Chicken. Most of my supermarket shopping occurs right after we put the twins down to sleep at 8pm. Adam reads to the older kids and tucks them in. That night I arrived home with a bunch of bags and fried chicken.

“I had a craving…” I started to explain to Adam.

He saw the fried chicken. His eyes went wide and he said, “OH NO!”

Yes, pregnancy and fried chicken go hand and hand with me. When I first moved to Chicago it wasn’t that out of the ordinary but now that my eating habits have changed to a calorie counter with vegan and paleo tendencies, it’s pretty out of character.

Next Adam was in a funk about a mistake he made at work. He expects his work to be perfect which is very hard when you are, you know, human.

Also, as many of you know, I’ve been waiting on a call for Ben to get evaluated for an IEP. An Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) is a “plan or program developed to ensure that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives specialized instruction and related services.”

Without it, I am sure Ben will not make it through Kindergarten.

Last Wednesday (and last tuesday, and last monday, and the friday before) I called the Office of Diverse Learners and found out that they are only open for one more week in the summer and there were no more appointments until September.

I almost broke down crying. “How did this happen?” I asked.

“I was told by the teacher who pre-screened him that we would be contacted in 3 weeks to 2 months for an appointment. That was on June 6th.” I said angrily.

“I can’t send him to school without help he won’t make it!” I wailed.

The woman on the other end of the phone took pity on me. “We often have cancellations, do you want me to call you if there is one?”

“Yes please”, I replied. “I will drop everything, wake two kids up from naps, do whatever I need to in order to make this happen.”

The next day I got the call at 8:30am. There was a cancellation. We packed food, books and other things. Adam cancelled his meetings, took off his newly donned suit and got ready for the mess that accompanies watching our other three kids.

We were there from 10am to 3pm. We were in the room with a case worker, a special ed teacher, a general ed teacher, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, a psychologist, a social worker and a speech pathologist.

They questioned me. They tested Ben.

In the end I walked out with an IEP. The plan was very accurate and allowed Ben lots of things to help him learn. Unfortunately, to implement it they were suggesting that he not attend the school his brother does (a top rated magnet school), but a “blended school”. This school was to be decided by the head office of CPS. They would send them the paperwork and I should expect a letter within 10 days.

My heart sank and once again I had to do everything in my power not to cry in front of these people.

“Can you note that he has already been accepted to his brother’s school?” I asked.

The OT suggested I talk to the school, because you never know if they are willing to be accommodating. Which gave me hope that it could still work out. But also depressed me because I knew it meant CPS would not suggest my school of choice.

That weekend we, along with two other Kindergarten parents, hosted a welcome party at Pump it Up. I arrived in a funk. I was suppose to be bright and friendly, purporting the virtues of the school that Ben may not even attend.

I started talking to the other hosts about the party. One heard my story and said, “Sounds exactly like my son’s IEP”. She then proceeded to tell me what else was in it. It was even more involved than Ben. In a moment, I had hope again.

This was like an emotional roller coaster that could only be stopped by someone of authority at Jack’s school.

Over the weekend one night I cried myself to sleep with the vision of myself pregnant, trudging the twins to two schools in the middle of a Chicago blizzard to pick up Jack and Ben. All while hoping that Adam would find gainful employment after he lost his job.

Monday morning Mr Monthly showed up. I had never been so happy to see myself bleed in my life.

Monday night Adam came home and told me the other side signed the paperwork he forgot and didn’t even fight about it. He was stressing over nothing.

And today, we met with Jack’s school. I was full of jitters. They held Ben’s future in their hands. Would they accept Ben or not?

Turns out the principal didn’t even notice the suggestion for a blended school. She looked at what he needed and said, “We can accommodate him.”

She looked me in the eyes, so deep it made my throat constrict and I felt like she was squeezing my tear ducts so tight that they were dangerously close to overflowing and said, “I have two kids with special needs. We are going to get him the help he needs.”

They are applying for an aide for him and will provide the other services on the IEP like occupational therapy and social work.

The kindergarten teacher and principal were upbeat and helpful, wanting to do the hard work required to help him thrive. They told stories of other kids they knew and they were so similar to Ben.

They are even happy to let me take him out early once a week to join a group therapy session at his therapist’s office.

So today I learned that it’s not just bad things, but good things happen in threes too!

Paleo Granola

Last week I was in Mariano’s when they were handing out samples of their Paleo Granola.

I’m not on the Paleo diet, although I like the thought process.

And I’m certainly NOT shelling out $12 for a pouch of granola.

But I tried the sample. It was good. So good I bought the $12 bag.

But I vowed never to do it again.

And now, thanks to America’s Test Kitchen Granola Recipe and my smarts at saving the empty Paleo Granola bag with the list of ingredients, I don’t have to.DSC_0184

Here is my version. It is tastier than any store bought granola I’ve found. And much cheaper too.

Mary Bartemle Park

Now that summer is closer to over than beginning, I’m starting to have a freak out about lots of things.

Ben starts school in less than a month and still has no IEP. I know for sure that they will not be able to handle him and it is something I worry about daily. I’ve started to call the Office of Diverse Learners daily, leaving messages that go unanswered hoping to find out when he will be tested.

I’m also freaking out about sillier things, things that I put on myself that is completely unnecessary, like the fact that I haven’t taken the kids to do enough fun, new, exciting things this summer.

So this week we started to hit some new parks. Or ones we hadn’t been to in ages. I’ve been using my handy app that my friend Mistie created, Playground Pointers.

Tuesday we tried Holstein Park in Logan Square. It was empty. It was also littered with trash. The wading pool wasn’t open and the water spray feature that looked so enticing in the pictures was a mere trickle. Jack climbed a bit then decided it was too buggy and wanted to leave.IMG_7249

So we headed over to Pulaski Park. It has a cool water playground I thought the kids would love. We got there around 10am and it was empty. I couldn’t believe our luck. But it turns out it was empty because it didn’t open until 11am.

We got back in the car and Jack told me I was fired. We headed home after a failed morning of exploring.

The next day we decided to try Mary Bartelme Park. Jack’s friend from school was with us and I’m pleased to say it was a much better experience.

Ben spent a ton of time climbing this.

Although the promised water spray feature again wasn’t working. Jack and Jaiden fixed that by using the water fountain to refill.

Fresh Picks (July 30)

This week Broccoli Raab, Arugula, Slicing Tomatoes, Zucchini, Lettuce, Green Beans and Sweet Corn.DSC_0118

The first thing to go was the zucchini, grated and baked into Chocolate Chip Zucchini Bread Muffins. I made a double batch and they lasted that evening and the next morning. All the kids love muffins. So do all the adults!DSC_0126

Green beans were blanched then iced, tossed with a mustard vinaigrette and topped with fresh basil. Yum.

Corn was boiled, buttered and salted for another side dish one night. The lettuce and tomatoes also made yummy salad sides for dinner.

Finally the arugula, sauteed with fresh chives then scrambled with an egg and served on toast. I skipped the blanching process so once again the arugula was quite bitter, but I ate it anyway. Next time I’ll blanch first.DSC_0136

Training Wheels

Among other goals that we had this summer for our older kids, (Jack learning to tie shoe laces, Ben buckling his seat belt and learning to swim…) one of the goals both Jack and Adam really wanted to achieve was to stop using Jack’s training wheels.

So on this sunny, 85° day, we dressed Jack in long sleeve and pants, took the training wheels off and prayed nothing too bad would happen.DSC_0151
Actually the only one who was sweating during this exercise was Adam. He just finished an 1 and 40 minute run and trying to shore up 65 pounds is no easy task.
Jack didn’t fall once. He even had a couple of good runs. It wasn’t the magic I envisioned, where we would take the wheels off and he would miraculously just ride perfectly, but it was a good start.
Were you wondering where the other kids were while Jack learned to ride?

My Awesome Summer Helper

This summer we hired a part time helper. Just like last summer, I used Sittercity. I placed an ad late and was worried all the good people would be taken.

But once again I had incredible luck with the ad. Twenty people applied for the job. Two really stood out. I asked both to come over and visit with the kids. Both seemed more than competent, caring and qualified. In the end Ben decided for us. Both visits he thought it would be funny to attack the applicants with stuffed animals or whatever he had handy. The first applicant handled it well but seemed a bit uncomfortable. The second leaned in and gave him a hug.

We had a winner.

Her name is Brittany and she has been making the summer fun for all of us.

DSC_0611 When our cousin Jackie first met her she thought she was so great she wanted to know if she was single. She would love her brother to marry someone like her! (She isn’t)

My mother couldn’t stop talking about how wonderful she was either. I think she called her “healthy”.

DSC_0858I love how she intuitively helps out without me having to ask all the time. Not just being playful with the kids but when the kids are occupied, cleaning, folding, straightening stuff around the house.

This morning while I took Ben to therapy she created this entire humongous hopscotch for the twins and Jack. They had a blast!

IMG_7219It has occured to me when writing this blog that she is so busy helping and playing with the kids all the time that I only have pictures of her bent over my kids! I’ll have to rectify that before summer is over.
