Japo!

Japo arrived late Friday night (I say late, it was 9:45, past my normal bedtime!) from Florida.

She came bearing, among other things, her famous Cranberry Chutney for Thanksgiving and my all time favorite Christmas cookie.

Two Snuggle Bunnies

She wasted no time snuggling up to the kids.

I wasted no time trying to figure out which restaurant Adam and I were going to eat at while we had all this free babysitting in town!

For a long time now I have been on a quest for real, authentic Thai food. I very excited to say – I think I’ve found it. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s blog…

A Thin Air Play Date

Yesterday I picked Jack up from school and he asked me, “Can we have a play date this afternoon?”

“Jack,” I answered, “Play dates don’t just appear out of thin air. You have to plan them. It’s too late to get a play date now.”

So we went home. Put on Cars 2. A few minutes later, the door bell rang. It was my friend Jennifer with her three kids!

“Can we come over and play?” She asked. “We had a play date down the street but it was cancelled.”

I stand corrected. I guess play dates do appear out of thin air.

Top Five Chicago Must Sees for Tourists

Last week I posted some winter, kid friendly stuff to do in Chicago on Hidden Little Gems. It’s a facebook app which provides lists to “discover places to eat, drink, stay & play from your friends”. Hidden Little Gems was started by an old friend of mine from my days in Asia.

As a result, a few of my old buddies saw the list and contacted me. I guess I never realized that, even though I moved out of that life and started a new one, most of them stayed there and still see each other.

A lot of them now have kids, so I’m hopeful that my list will be useful to them. But not all. So, I decided a needed to post a few more lists to represent the lone Chicagoan of the group!

This next post, Uniquely Chicago Experiences. If you are looking for touristy stuff to do when people are in town, these five things are a must.

Pregnancy Update – 14 Weeks

Not much to report this week. Next week I have another check up with the doctor but this week I’m basically sitting around incubating.

When you are pregnant the question you get asked most often is, “How are you feeling?”

My response for the past three months has been, “I’m much more tired this pregnancy. I think it’s the extra hormones from having twins.”

Then, this past weekend, I went to New York. Same hormones, but no kids waking me up screaming in the middle of the night. No responding to kiddie requests every 5 seconds. No carrying, no chores, no cooking.

You know what? I wasn’t tired once.

Hidden Little Gems

Vacationing in Boracay, Phillipines

An old friend of mine from Hong Kong, Philip Hofmeyr, recently started a facebook app called Hidden Little Gems. The tag line is “discover places to eat, drink, stay & play from your friends”. I love this idea of having people ‘in the know’ telling you the great little secrets of their cities. Since I know first hand how fun and adventurous Phil and his buddies are, I completely trust the content. To give you some idea of the Asia crazy I lived through in my 8 years abroad, check out the picture above. A group of us went vacationing in Boracay, Phillipines. For some reason we all decided to dress alike. The boys chose bikinis! They were a real hit at all the bars that night. If this picture isn’t an endorsement for how fun loving Phil and his friends are, then maybe stick something traditional like Fodor’s.

I posted my first list last week. Unfortunately, my stay at home pregnant mom status doesn’t quite match the party animal person I was back in Asia. I’m not looking for the latest hot spots anymore! I noticed my old roommate from Hong Kong’s list was titled ‘Best Places to Kiss in Paris‘. My how we’ve gone in different directions in life!

I was trying to think of something I searched for in the past on the internet that isn’t really there for the city of Chicago. I decided on Best Museums for Kids in Chicago. As the weather gets colder and colder, I’m constantly racking my brains for places to take the kids in the winter. Last year we had almost every single museum membership available. This year we paired it down to the ones most friendly for kids. Hope you enjoy them (you can click on the link “Best Museums for Kids in Chicago” to view.)

New York, New York

Nobu TriBeCa

I spent this past weekend staying at the W Hotel with a man who was not my husband. My good friend from my days in Hong Kong, Tom Chu, was there training for his new job as head of Asia for Cole Haan. Tom is also gay, so don’t worry, the weekend was completely approved by my husband.

It was everything a pregnant mom on her weekend off could hope for and more.

We ate and ate and ate. We ate so much I thought I might be growing a third baby right there. Tom treated us all to dinner at Nobu Friday night. I can still taste the miso cod. Heavenly. Then my friend from high school, Kate Fortunato, headed out with Tom and I for a day of shopping and to Barney’s for lunch the next day. We also stopped by Kate’s husband’s restaurant, Extra Virgin, where Kate treated us to some afternoon drinks and dessert. The place was packed even though it was 4pm! He recently got featured on Food Network’s “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” for his Sunday night Spaghetti and Meatballs. Finally another buddy of Tom and I from Hong Kong, Greg Tan, who now lives in New York had us over for dinner at his place. Back in the day, Tom, Greg and I were like the three stooges. He wanted to order in but there was a delicious spread of leftovers from his kids dinner including Chinese Duck. We happily ate that instead!

In the evening I got a massage from Spa Belles off Bleeker with Evin. Kate recommended him. He was so good I wanted to pack him in the suitcase and bring him home with me.

And there was shopping. Tom treated me with his discount at Cole Haan. I bought a much needed new pair of boots, and got Adam a couple of pairs as well. With the Nike Technology inside, they are super comfortable.

There was also star sightings everywhere we went. We sat across from Chase Crawford from Gossip Girl. Tom asked me if I recognized him. To which I replied – I’m not twelve. At Barney’s, Steve Martin. On the street we walked past Ed Burns with his kid.

Best of all, I didn’t get woken up in the middle of the night from crying kids.

Sadly, I did not get to see Greg’s wife, Margie. In an unbelievably cruel twist of fate, their third son, Ollie was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of Leukemia. He has been in the hospital for 4 months now. He is scheduled for his fourth round of chemo. This weekend he suffered from a high fever all weekend and Margie was not able to leave his side. Because he was in isolation, we could not go to them. If you are reading this and live in New York, they are still looking for a donor for type B+ blood for him…

Pregnancy Update – Week 13

13 Weeks Worth of Twins

This week I spent some time looking back at my old pregnancy photos. I actually did a month by month comparison of my belly for the first two pregnancies on our old website. At the time I wondered why I was spending so much time doing it, but now that we are having twins I’m so glad I did. Now I don’t have to search through my files month by month to compare. All I know at this point is it’s going to be much bigger. Perhaps grotesque. Already this time around my 3 month photo looks like my 4 month photos in previous pregnancies!

Jack was getting in the bath last week when he asked me why my nipples were sandy. They were not sandy, I told him. And please don’t touch my private parts, I added. They were growing milk for the new babies. And growing they are! As I’ve discussed recently with a few of my girlfriends, pregnancy makes your boobs grow and grow and grow. Then you have the baby and they get even bigger. That’s when you buy nursing bras. At three months pregnant, I’m wearing the nursing bras from my first two pregnancies and they fit.

The whole episode with Jack made me wondered if my nakedness was going to scar him for life. Then I thought – maybe I should stop showering while they boys bathed. But then, more thoughts. When would I find a new time to shower? When they were sleeping? That’s during my precious few hours of freedom! Suddenly a little scaring didn’t seem so bad.

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum

For years my girlfriends and I have frequented the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum during the winter months. This little known gem in the city is never crowded. The kids can run around like mad for a few hours for a lot less money than most ‘pay to play’ spaces in the city.

Ben in the Colon Crawl. Eww.

Most of my girlfriends have memberships. A family membership is only $60 a year and you get free coat check along with some other benefits. I didn’t bother with the membership, instead I use my Children’s Museum Membership card to get 1/2 of the admission price. Adult full price is $9, kids 3-12 are $6 and kids under 3 are free. So when I go with just Ben it’s only $4.50. On Thursdays it’s free for Illinois residents.

All the exhibits are either made for kids or are very kid friendly. They recently opened the ‘Eww, What’s Eating You?’ exhibit. We were all surprised to see Carrot Top hosting the videos. It was kind of gross in a fascinating way. I definitely plan to take Jack back to play the ‘Parasite Pinball’ game.

Acid Reflux in Children

For the past year or so, Jack has been plagued with a nagging, persistent cough.

We took it to our pediatrician. She gave him a course of antibiotics. They didn’t work. Next she tried steroids. Still no change. Next she suggested we see an allergy specialist.

At this point I spoke my friend Carrie, who also happens to be an MD. When I mentioned the dry, persistent cough, she said it could only be one of three things. Allergies, Acid Reflux, or Asthma. Then she suggested that there was over the counter medication for all these things, and why don’t I just go through the meds and see what works. Finally she gave me the correct dosage for a child Jack’s age and weight.

I could not believe after all those visits to our pediatrician, she couldn’t tell me something that seemed so simple and clear to Carrie!

After that we switched pediatricians.

We started with allergies. I can’t remember which one now. But the medicine didn’t work. Next we used Prilosec, an acid reflux drug. In four days Jack wasn’t coughing at all!

We read all the material we could online about acid reflux. No acidic food, don’t eat right before bed. We followed it.

Six months later the cough was back. And worse. Jack would complain he was hungry in the morning, but wouldn’t eat. Next thing you know he was coughing until he was throwing up. We used Prilosec again. This time it took six days. I was worried it was unsustainable.

Adam suggested we book with an appointment for Jack with a specialist. I called the Children\’s Memorial Hospital Gastroenterology. First we met with Dr John Rosen and later the head of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Dr Barry Wershil.

We learned that the over the counter medications will suppress acid reflux, but it won’t neutralized the problem. Which is why it kept coming back. We were not solving the problem, we were masking it.

I asked if Jack would grow out of the problem. Apparently acid reflux is common in infants, who outgrow it, but not in children.

Jack was given a 90 day dose of Prevacid.

We were pleased to hear the side effects were less than an aspirin for the short dose he was prescribed. We were also pleased to hear that acidic food in normal quantities should not effect acid reflux. However, eating right before bed can agitate it.

I hope it works and we can put this problem behind us.

This whole episode made me realize how important your job is as a parent. On so many levels. Not just feeding, cleaning, encouraging, teaching. But also to be your children’s biggest advocate. Not to blindly trust what some pediatrician thinks is the right course. No one knows your child like you do. Trust your inner instincts. Do your research. Be proactive.

Living The Dream

Supera Park

Last week we met up with some friends at Supera Park. It’s amazing to watch how playground play has changed for Jack over the years. It used to be all about the swings and structures. Now it’s more about creative play in the open spaces. The structures are some days not used at all, or if they are, they are not used for the purpose intended. Nowadays a crawl space may become a jail. I often see the good guy/bad guy game complete with finger shooters. Jack only needs one friend there to have a lot of fun, and a lot of the time a group of kids his age will end up running around in hysterics pretending they are pirates or some kind of superhero.

Having grown up in a family of girls I find it all so fascinating. We never played these types of games. There was a lot of Barbies and playing house. Ironically it is not that dissimilar to what I do now. I guess you can say that I’m living the dream! Perhaps that is why I find my life so great. I’ve been practicing for it my whole life!

Must be so frustrating for most men. They grow up practicing to be super heros, pirates and good guys. They end up in front of some computer all day, sitting on their butts.
