A Lesson for All

I don’t know what it is about staying home with kids that brings out the worst in me. Maybe I didn’t child proof the house enough? Why do the kids feel the need to fight over the same toy when my toy loving husband has created a playroom to rival Ricky Stratton’s in Silver Spoons?.

I guess if I were totally honest with myself, the reason we get along better when we are out somewhere is that I don’t have all the distractions that home brings. Besides checking my phone for emails or the occasional facebook surf, I’m much more devoted and willing to play with them without the kitchen, computer, or laundry room near by.

This morning was our third morning of quarantine due to Jack’s fever. I was happily making Chipotle Lentil Burgers from my new favorite cookbook, Appetite for Reduction, while the boys made a mess of the front room. For the zillionth time I heard Ben screaming and looked up to see Jack grabbing the toy he was playing with.

Instinctively I screamed at Jack, who quickly moved under the chair to avoid the confrontation. I went back to my burgers. A second later I heard Ben say, “Where is the Spider?”

A muffled reply from under the chair said, “It’s on the bottom, Ben.”

All of a sudden I realized that Ben had been asking for the spider and Jack had been trying to turn his toy over to show him. I felt terrible.

Jack, and perhaps all kids his age, has started to want to help. He can help with the cooking, carrying in the groceries, turning out the lights, and most endearingly, soothing and solving Ben’s problems. If Ben wants the stuffed animals from his crib, Jack will run to his room, hop over the crib railing and dutifully throw the animals at Ben while Ben gleefully yells for more.

Here was a case of Jack trying to help.

I dropped the burgers and apologized to Jack. Kneeling by the chair I said, “You were trying to help Ben find the spider, weren’t you?”

I could see relief in his big, beautiful brown eyes and the weight of being misunderstood fall from his shoulders.

Then I moved over to Ben. “Jack was just trying to help you. Do you want him to show you where the spider is?”

Ben let Jack take the toy but freaked out when he showed him the spider. Maybe he was asking so he would know where not to look. Ben is super articulate for a 2 year old and simply said. “No, Jack, the spider is scary.”

After that I sat down in the chair and spent a long time observing and commenting on any behavior I saw that was good to make up for my earlier outburst. You know what? There was a lot more good behavior than bad. You just had to be willing to put all the distractions away to notice. And really, what could be more important than that?

Mending Fences

Who knew how thrilling reorganizing the house and running errands with just one kid could be?

Jack went back to school yesterday and I knocked a ton of things off my huge to-do list. The one I started before summer started.

In a day, I went from putting out fires to mending fences. Or should I say, from putting out fights to mending clothing?

It was very enjoyable, and very short lived. Jack has been up the past couple of nights with a fever as high as 103°. Poor guy was so tired that he actually crawled into his bed to nap – no fight or stall tactic used at all.

Mom tip – If your kid refuses to take liquid medicine try the chewable kind. We went from hysterical crying, gagging and throwing up mixed with unsuccessful bribery to, ‘Is it time to take my medicine yet?’.

New Batman Shirt

Check out the Cape

How adorable is Jack’s new Batman shirt? It came with a cape Velcro-ed to the back. He loved it so much he asked if I could wash it tonight.

We spent some time this morning practicing some T-Ball with Jack. Later Ben found a guy in the park with a balloon on his head. He was so fascinated he followed him around, staring and pointing.

Balance!

The Boy & the Balloon

Finally the boy handed the balloon over to Ben. He tried to balance it on his head as well, with less success.

When we left we passed it over to the next little kid that was fascinated by it.

I’m hoping all this cuteness will forgive the embarrassing story I’m about to tell. On the way home from dinner at my new favorite Vietnamese restaurant, Hai Yen, as we strolled across Armitage, I saw that the man in the car patiently waiting for us to pass was our mohel, David Landau. Instinctively I made a cutting gesture with my fingers. I don’t think he appreciated it. As soon as I did it was knew it was wrong. Like flashing Halle Berry shortly after she filmed Swordfish.

Brookfield Zoo Visit

Jack the Snake

The weather dropped 30 degrees over night. Instantly everything changed. An outdoor activity no longer required some sort of water splash area. We donned long sleeves and pants for the first time in months. And we decided it would be a perfect time to revisit the Brookfield Zoo.

Incredibly, most of what we did was completely different from our last visit. We took a very informative tram ride. We petted the sting rays. Ben was very interested in all the animals. Jack was interested in how great snow cones were because they didn’t drip all over you like ice cream on a stick.

As I mentioned before in a previous blog on the Brookfield Zoo, we bought the family membership. Now that we’ve gone twice, it has already saved us money. But we are planning to go back to see the pumpkin carvings and winter ice sculptures too before the membership is up!

Digital Boot Camp

Yesterday my very thoughtful and supportive husband treated me to the one thing I wanted most in my life. No, not massage, nor fancy clothes, or an expensive dinner. He treated me to an all day, private class at Digital Boot Camp.

I learned a lot of great things, like how to get more people to your website. Not that I need it for calisoff.com, but maybe one day I’ll be struck by some idea so brilliant I’ll feel the need to share it with the world.

Most importantly I learned how to back up this blog. It’s increasingly becoming the photo album/baby book for the next generation. I’d hate to lose it.

Hope you enjoy the new site!

Weisman Park

My goodness this park has had a make-over since we last visited! Before it had sad structures and wood chips. Now it has a water splash area, a variety of play structures, and soft surface with the occasional bit of astroturf.

The boys found plenty of uses for the different play structures, a few of them were quite creative. I’m sure none of the uses were the intended ones.

We enjoyed it so much we made another play date to meet here again before we even left. One word of warning if you are thinking of going – no washrooms. Be prepared to let your kids go on the nearest tree!

Old Friends

I guess when you’ve only lived 4 and 1/2 years, if you’ve known someone since you were 2, that must make that person a very old friend. Jack was so happy when he past the park a few days ago and saw his friend Josephine was back from her month long vacation in France. He jumped out of the stroller and ran up to her to give her a big hug. She is one of the few play mates in his life that he actually asks about when she’s not around.

So when Josephine’s mom called for a play date, Jack couldn’t wait. I can’t tell you how many times I asked him today to make a decision on something and he replied, “What’s Josephine doing?”.

Josephine did not disappoint. She splashed around with him in the water, taught him Chinese jump rope, and shared her sidewalk chalk.

After all that hard play, we needed a pick me up. So we went to Annette’s for ice cream. The kids size is as big as your fist. Jack is on a kick where he wants a new flavor every time we get ice cream. Today he happily ate Moosetracks. Ben stuck with Chocolate. I scavenged the left overs.

Finally we stopped by Josephine’s to pick up the presents she brought back for the boys…

Jack was very happy for his new coloring book and went home to start on it right away. He even wanted me to read the story at the bottom but it was in French so I had to make it up. I hope I did it justice.

School Mates

Summer is ending. You can feel the chill in the air. It’s the perfect weather but unlike the beginning of summer, this gorgeous weather comes with a sense of foreboding. Freezing winter is lurking somewhere out there.

Once again change brings mixed emotions. On the one hand I’m starting to make lists of all the things I will accomplish when Jack returns to school. On the other hand, I’ll miss him terribly when he first goes back.

Playing with their matching Transformers

For now all I can do is try to squeeze as much fun and enjoyment out of what little time I have left of good weather and days with no place to be.

Yesterday was Japo’s last day in Chicago. I took full advantage by having another play date for Jack with Kaden. At this age, having another kid to look after actually makes my life easier. Especially when the kid is an angel.

I’m hoping all these school mate play dates will help Jack get more excited about going back to school. He’s already asking when it’s time to go back so maybe it’s working. Or maybe he’s just sick of me!

Japo Visit the Morton Arboretum

Today we took Japo out of the hustle and bustle of city living and into nature.

I know I keep saying how much I love this place, but each time I go we have yet another new and completely different experience. The crazy part is that we’ve seen less than 10% of what it has to offer.

Japo and Jack in the Children's Garden

Japo loved the perfect temperature. She also enjoyed seeing the Arboretum because it satifisied one of her favorite hobbies – exploring new places. Jack and Ben’s favorite part of the day was spending time with Papa.

Sugar Filled Fun

Today was another one of those days that was jam packed with fun and candy with a few pizzas and hot dogs in between.

We started the day with breakfast at Feast. We love the Bucktown location, noticed they opened on the Gold Coast, and thought we ought to check it out. Yummy. If there was a kid menu for breakfast we never got it but it didn’t matter, one regular meal and some sides worked perfectly for the kids.

After we attended Logan’s birthday at Chuck E Cheese. It brought back loads of childhood memories.

Remember these Scary Characters?

It also brought pizza, cake, and cookies. Jack and Ben amassed 360 tickets, enough for a monster truck and candy. Japo sharked the coin tables and managed to get us our longest strip of tickets by strategic coin dropping.

From went from party to party. Next on the agenda was our annual Block Party. Dayton Street rocks. Band, Kegs, BBQ, Bike Parade, Pie Eating Contest, Face Painting, Arts and Crafts, Bouncy House, Pinata, Magician, Ice Cream Truck and the most delicious treats from Charlie Trotter. Every year he delights us with something new and different. I saw watermelon juice with rum, oysters, brownies but I’m sure there was more that I missed.

The kids absolutely loved the Magician, The Great Scott. He was silly funny and very interactive.

The Great Scott Captivates

If you want to see real fun just do what we did tonight, get them all sugared up on cotton candy, ice cream and candy then throw them in a bouncy house. Jack’s buddy Roya held her own in a house full of boys. After seeing her take Jack down again and again in the tent, I’m considering signing him up for her Tai Kwan Do lessons!
