Mother’s Day at the Museum of Science and Industry

I hope everyone had a great mother’s day.

It seems with each stage in life there are more holidays and gift giving for just being you.

When you were first born, there was your birthday and Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa or whatever end of the year celebration that you celebrated and received gifts.

When you were old enough to date, Valentine’s day was another way to get gifts.

Next came marriage and with it an anniversary.

Then kids and mother’s day.

Now some of these are Hallmark made up holidays but we humans are like lemmings, if one of us are doing it, we all feel we must follow.

Having said that, we had a lovely morning with Adam’s mother and husband at the Museum of Science and Industry this year.

On the steps of the Museum of Science and Industry

Followed by a great long nap for the entire family, which, at this stage in our life is the very definition of a good day.

Stay tuned for a future blog about the Museum of Science and Industry. It’s such an amazing place I think it deserves it’s own blog.

Self Improvement

Either I’m evolving or really impressionable.

You would think constantly wanting to change or try things just because others are doing it would mean you are secretly unhappy. But actually it’s the opposite.

In fact a loss of interest in life’s activities, lack of energy, and inability to see the bright side are the very symptoms of unhappiness.

I love my life but it doesn’t mean I don’t want to be able to run longer, lift heavier weights, be skinnier, have better hair, better skin, be a better parent, be a better wife, have more computer skills, read more books, eat healthier, improve my yoga practice and so much more. No matter how great you think you are, there is always room for improvement.

But it does bother me that sometimes I can’t tell if I’m trying to better myself or just be like someone else.

I was over at my friend Hedy’s house the other day. She is into food combining. I knew little about it but was curious. Not curious enough to take the 300+ book that she suggested, especially since the first page I opened had math equations on it. But now I’ve downloaded my food combining chart and I’m already eating differently. She also made me an amazing cocktail. Tequila, Pama pomegranate liqueur, and a splash of fizzy water. The next day I was at Costco buying the ingredients! Evolving or impressionable?

I guess it didn’t matter. Learning about all the new things that day made me happy. It enriched my conversations with others. Maybe it even made me eat a bit healthier. And hey, my husband said the tequila made me quite entertaining.

So I say – people, go ahead and browse the self help aisle without embarrassment, take a new class, unabashedly keep up with the Jones’!

Top Five Ways to Sneak the Fruit and Veg

Mom friends, I know everyone has their own way to make their kids eat fruit and vegetables. Ben is still at the age where you can just put something in front of him he’ll pretty much eat it. Jack is borderline OCD when it comes to food. Too hot, he doesn’t like the texture, carrots are icky, he’ll only eat it if it’s sliced a certain way, if it is the right amount – four mini muffins or nothing, ugh!

So over time I’ve developed ways for him to eat stuff he normally wouldn’t. By the way girls, this works for husbands as well.

1. Cooked in ground meat. I stick spinach in my turkey meatballs Baked Meatballs, my meatloaf will have red peppers or mushrooms chopped in . I absolutely love Trump’s Mar-a-Lago burger, with added celery and apples. Mar-a-Lago Turkey Burger.

2. Mixed in with carbs. The trick is to use very small carbs so they can’t avoid the veg. With a big corkscrew or bow pasta they can eat right around vegetables. Brown rice becomes fried rice with corn, peas, bits of carrot, mushroom, really anything you have leftover in your fridge you need to purge. I try to make it colorful. Edamame too! Fried Rice. Or whole wheat Orzo gets spinach and a tin of diced tomatoes in it and some feta on top.

3. Quiche. Another purge your fridge favorite. Broccoli, tomatoes, spinach, mushroom, asparagus, whatever is in there that needs a home. Adam needs to watch cholesterol and I need less calories so we use egg substitute or mostly egg whites, maybe with one yolk thrown in for color. I don’t have a standing recipe, just crust with veggies in it topped with some cheese then whisked eggs with some milk. Baked at 350.

4. Baked in bread. Carrot Apple Muffins, Zucchini Bread. There are load of recipes on the net that you can download. I try hard to keep white carbs out of the house. My favorite two muffin recipes I’ve been using lately are Oatmeal Blueberry Muffins Oatmeal Muffins & Morning Glory Muffins Morning Glory Muffins.

5. In a Blender. If I make a smoothie in the morning Ben will gulp the entire thing down. I always start with a yogurt or kefir base and banana. After that I toss in any kind of frozen fruit or fruit on it’s last legs in the fridge with some ice. Any kind of berry. They sell great Acai packs at whole foods that I love. Acai Frozen Fruit Packs. Sometimes frozen mango and pineapple for a tropical treat.

Another trick I like – when I seem them winding down dinner I will pull out a fruit I need chopped up like cantalope, watermelon or pineapple. When they see it they ask for it and sometimes fill up on it and completely forget about dessert.

If you have any tips let me know!

Children’s Museum Visit

Some days it just seems easier to pack drinks, snacks, diaper, wipes, camera, phone, wallet and some highly caffeinated drink for mom and go to a museum or some pay to play space than it is to just go home and hang out.

Seems counter intuitive, going home should be easier and more relaxing, but it’s not. It breeds toy envy which leads to wrestling which leads to punching, kicking and biting. It doesn’t seem to happen when we are out. Perhaps it’s because I have nothing else to do while we are out but focus on the kids, so I can stop the fighting before it starts. Or maybe new toys make for nicer afternoons.

Either way, this afternoon no amount of caffeine could make me face the toy envy, punching, kicking, biting and eventual inevitability of me screaming at the top of my lungs type of afternoon.

Luckily the Children’s Museum is open late tonight. Until 8pm. For any Chicago Mom’s out there it’s a great tip. A better tip is finding out that they have started a new membership add on. For $80 (prorated if you already have a membership) you can get unlimited parking. That’s about 4 visits of parking. Definitely makes it worth it. Especially if you are facing a summer of two kids with no help or school.

How angry do you think my husband is going to be when he sees this photo? I can't help it! Ben loves to dress up!

I found you, Ben!

We finished with a dinner of McDonalds at Navy Pier after the museum. I think that sums up just how tired and defeated I felt today. Jack couldn’t have been happier with his new Batman toys so I guess it was a win-win all around. The key is lowering your standard enough to see it is a win, I guess.
